Minister Says Government-Academia Collaboration Key to Resolving Power Sector Issues

Islamabad – Commending the role of NUST in world-class human capital formation and nation-building, Sardar Awais Ahmed Khan Leghari underscored the need for sustained government-university collaboration for tackling power sector challenges, demanding high level of technical expertise, during his keynote address at the seminar on electricity generation, transmission, and distribution organized by NUST US-Pakistan Center for Advanced Studies in Energy (USPCAS-E) and the NUST Institute of Policy Studies (NIPS) on Tuesday, October 8, 2024. The seminar was held in collaboration with the Ministry of Energy (Power Division) as part of the latter’s efforts for serious knowledge-based engagement with academia.

The minister was welcomed upon arrival by Rector NUST Lieutenant General (Retd) Javed Mahmood Bukhari and informed of the university’s multidimensional strengths in knowledge production, research, and innovation promotion.

The minister stressed that power tariff reduction is one of the key priorities of the government which, he remarked, requires comprehensive power sector reforms based on the rationalization of the overall political economy of power generation and distribution, including the mutually acceptable review of agreements with IPPs.

Sardar Awais Leghari further said the lack of consistent expert input, absence of strategic mindset, and past reliance on adhocism have led, among other things, to capacity charges, circular debt, and increased electricity prices. The minister assured the attendees that the government was committed to providing cost-effective electricity to consumers and was in the process of taking practical steps toward that end.

Other speakers of the seminar included: Syed Moonis Abdullah Alvi; CEO K-Electric, Tauseef Farooqi, former Chairman NEPRA; and Syed Akhtar Ali, former Member, Energy, Planning Commission. The seminar was attended in large numbers by students, researchers, academics, and power sector experts.
